Rev. Clément was preaching in Algeria when he undertook an hybridation between a tangerine and a small sweet orange called "bigarade", in 1902. He never thought the new product would be so successful. In fact the clementine happens to include no seeds . Besides, as it results from a special kind of orange called "bigarade", Father Clément's fruit is bigger than the asian tangerine. The brand new fruit was quickly sent accross the Mediterranean where it spread with this very same designation over the Iberic Peninsula and, to Italy . Father Clement's fruit also crossed the Rhine River but this time, as a klementine.
